StanserhornBahn

The Stanserhornbahn is a mountain transport system in the Swiss canton of Nidwalden, serving the area near Stans and the Stanserhorn massif. The line provides access from the town to the Stanserhorn summit and is designed as a two-stage journey: a historic funicular from Stans to an intermediate hillside station, followed by a panoramic cable car from the upper station to the summit.

Historically, the Stanserhornbahn dates from the late 19th century and is among Switzerland’s older funiculars. It was originally powered by a water counterweight system, a common method at the time for raising and lowering cars along the incline. The route has undergone several modernization efforts over the decades to improve capacity and safety while preserving its function as a regional transportation and tourism link.

In 2014, the line was significantly modernized with the introduction of the Cabrio, a two-story panoramic cable car. The Cabrio features an open upper deck and a closed lower deck, offering expansive views of the surroundings as passengers ride to the summit. The Stanserhornbahn is operated by Stanserbahn AG and serves both locals and tourists.

At the upper station, visitors can access a viewing platform and a mountaintop restaurant, along with hiking trails and panoramic vistas over Lake Lucerne and the surrounding Alpine scenery. The system remains a popular destination for day trips and produces a distinctive combination of historic rail heritage and contemporary panoramic transport.
