Standardmõõtühikuid, also known as standard units of measurement, are a set of internationally recognized and defined quantities used for measuring physical properties. The most widely adopted system is the International System of Units (SI), which evolved from the metric system. SI provides a coherent and comprehensive framework for measurement, encompassing base units and derived units. The seven base units in SI are the meter (m) for length, kilogram (kg) for mass, second (s) for time, ampere (A) for electric current, kelvin (K) for thermodynamic temperature, mole (mol) for amount of substance, and candela (cd) for luminous intensity.

These base units are used to define a vast number of derived units for quantities such as area, volume, force, energy, and power. For example, the unit of force, the newton (N), is derived from the base units of mass, length, and time (kg⋅m/s²). The use of standard units ensures consistency and comparability of measurements across different scientific disciplines, industries, and countries. This standardization is crucial for international trade, scientific research, technological development, and everyday life, enabling clear communication and preventing errors that could arise from differing measurement systems. Prefixes are also used in conjunction with SI units to express very large or very small quantities, such as kilo (k) for 1000 and milli (m) for 0.001.
