Språkrådets

Språkrådet, officially the Swedish Language Council, is Sweden’s national authority on the Swedish language. As a public agency, it serves to promote and safeguard the Swedish language and to advise government bodies, organizations, and the public on language matters. The council’s work covers spelling, grammar, punctuation, terminology, and style, and it produces guidance and reference materials for use in schools, media, libraries, and official communications. It maintains online resources and language databases, publishes writing guidelines, and conducts or supports research on language usage and trends, including the acceptance of new words and language changes.

Språkrådet engages with researchers, educators, journalists, language professionals, and the public to discuss linguistic issues and to inform language policy. It also collaborates with other Nordic language authorities and participates in international networks related to language planning and policy. The council operates under the purview of the Swedish government and is funded as part of national language policy. Its aim is to support clear, correct, and inclusive Swedish in all areas of public life while respecting language variation and change.
