Solar oscillations refer to the natural vibrations of the Sun. These oscillations are caused by sound waves that travel through the Sun's interior. As the Sun is a giant ball of gas, these waves can propagate through it, creating patterns of motion on its surface. Scientists study these oscillations through a field called helioseismology, which is analogous to seismology used to study earthquakes on Earth.

Helioseismology allows researchers to probe the Sun's internal structure and dynamics, much like seismologists study Earth's interior by analyzing seismic waves. The oscillations are observed as tiny variations in the Sun's surface velocity, appearing as slight shifts in the Doppler-shifted light emitted from the Sun. Different types of oscillations, characterized by their frequencies and spatial patterns, reveal information about different depths within the Sun, including the convection zone, the radiative zone, and even the Sun's core.

By analyzing the frequencies and patterns of these solar oscillations, scientists can determine properties such as temperature, density, and the flow of material beneath the Sun's surface. This information is crucial for understanding the Sun's energy generation processes, its magnetic field generation (dynamo), and predicting solar activity, such as solar flares and coronal mass ejections.
