Skalefördelar, or economies of scale, refer to the cost advantages that arise when a company or organization increases its level of output. As production increases, the average cost per unit of output decreases. This phenomenon occurs because fixed costs, such as rent and machinery, can be spread over a larger number of units. Variable costs can also decrease due to bulk purchasing of raw materials, greater specialization of labor, and more efficient use of technology.

There are several types of economies of scale. Technical economies of scale relate to the physical process of production, where larger plants can utilize more efficient machinery and processes. Purchasing economies of scale occur when larger firms can negotiate lower prices for raw materials and components due to their significant buying power. Managerial economies of scale arise from the ability to employ specialist managers for different functions, leading to greater efficiency. Financial economies of scale benefit larger companies through easier access to capital and lower interest rates on loans. Marketing economies of scale allow for lower per-unit advertising and distribution costs as advertising campaigns and distribution networks can serve a larger customer base.

Conversely, diseconomies of scale can occur when a company becomes too large, leading to increased average costs. This can happen due to communication problems, bureaucratic inefficiencies, and a lack of coordination. Understanding and managing economies of scale is crucial for businesses seeking to improve profitability and competitiveness.
