Sinhala-speaking refers to people who use Sinhala as their primary or native language, most notably the Sinhalese people of Sri Lanka. The term also encompasses communities abroad who communicate in Sinhala. Sinhala is an Indo-Aryan language in the Indo-European family, developed on the island of Sri Lanka from older Prakrits with significant influence from Pali and Sanskrit in religious and literary contexts. The standard written form is Standard Sinhala, which uses the Sinhala script, an abugida derived from Brahmi scripts. The language has regional varieties and several dialects, which differ in pronunciation and some vocabulary but are generally mutually intelligible.
Most Sinhala speakers reside in Sri Lanka, where Sinhala is one of the official languages alongside Tamil.
