This fundamental building block consists of a silicon atom bonded to four oxygen atoms arranged in a tetrahedral structure. Quartz, for instance, is a simple silicate where the tetrahedra are not linked to other tetrahedra but are balanced by cations. Feldspars, on the other hand, have more complex structures where the tetrahedra share oxygen atoms to form frameworks. Mica minerals exhibit sheet-like structures formed by the sharing of oxygen atoms between tetrahedra. Olivine is an example of a nesosilicate, where the SiO4 tetrahedra are isolated and linked by metal cations.

The crystalline structure of silicates is crucial to their physical and chemical properties. The arrangement of the silicon-oxygen tetrahedra and the cations influences their hardness, cleavage, density, and melting point.
