Sikiökerrokset, also known as fetal membranes, are a group of specialized structures that surround and protect the developing fetus during pregnancy. These membranes are essential for the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy and the proper development of the fetus. The primary fetal membranes are the amnion and the chorion.

The amnion is the innermost membrane, enclosing the amniotic fluid. This fluid serves multiple crucial functions, including cushioning the fetus against external trauma, maintaining a stable temperature, preventing the umbilical cord from being compressed, and allowing for fetal movement, which is vital for musculoskeletal development.

The chorion is the outer membrane. In early pregnancy, the chorion contributes to the formation of the placenta. Its villi, finger-like projections, embed into the uterine wall, facilitating the exchange of nutrients, oxygen, and waste products between the mother and the fetus.

Together, the amnion and chorion form the amniotic sac, commonly referred to as "the waters," which ruptures typically during labor, signaling the onset of childbirth. Other membranes, such as the yolk sac and allantois, are also present in early fetal development, playing roles in nutrient supply and waste removal before the placenta becomes fully functional.
