Sigüenza

Sigüenza is a municipality and city in the province of Guadalajara, in the autonomous community of Castile-La Mancha, Spain. It is located in the geographical region of La Serranía. The city is situated on a rocky hill overlooking the Henares River. It is known for its well-preserved medieval old town and its imposing cathedral.

The history of Sigüenza stretches back to pre-Roman times. It was an important settlement for the Celtiberian people, the Pellendones. Later, it was conquered by the Romans and then by the Visigoths. During the Muslim rule, it was known as Wansiyya. The city was reconquered by the Christian kingdoms in the 12th century. The cathedral, a major landmark, began construction in the 12th century and was significantly altered over subsequent centuries, showcasing a mix of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance styles.

Key attractions in Sigüenza include the aforementioned Cathedral of Santa María, which houses significant artworks and the tomb of Martín Vázquez de Arce. The Castle of Sigüenza, originally a Roman fort, was transformed into a Moorish alcazar and later a medieval castle, now functioning as a parador hotel. The historic center features narrow, winding streets, ancient churches like San Vicente and Santiago, and charming plazas. The Plaza Mayor is the heart of the old town.
