Semen analysis parameters are objective measurements used to assess the fertilizing capacity of human semen. These parameters provide critical information for fertility investigations and reproductive health assessments. Key parameters include semen volume, which is the total amount of ejaculate, typically measured in milliliters. Sperm concentration, also known as sperm count, refers to the number of sperm per milliliter of semen, usually expressed in millions per milliliter.

Motility assesses the percentage of sperm that are moving. It is often divided into progressive motility, where sperm move forward linearly, and non-progressive motility, where sperm move but not forward. Viability measures the percentage of live sperm, as dead sperm cannot contribute to fertilization. Morphology examines the size and shape of sperm, with normal morphology indicating proper development.

Other parameters may include pH, which indicates the acidity or alkalinity of the semen, and the presence of leukocytes, which can suggest infection. Liquefaction time, the time it takes for semen to become fluid after ejaculation, is also assessed. These parameters are evaluated using standardized laboratory procedures, and results are compared against established reference ranges to determine if they fall within normal limits. Deviations from these norms can indicate potential fertility issues or other health concerns.
