Selectiinireseptorit are a family of cell surface proteins that play a crucial role in the immune system, particularly in the process of lymphocyte homing and activation. These receptors are characterized by their ability to bind to specific carbohydrate ligands, known as sialic acids, which are found on the surfaces of various cells. The most well-known members of the selectiin family are L-selectin, E-selectin, and P-selectin.

L-selectin is expressed on the surface of lymphocytes and is involved in the initial interaction between lymphocytes and endothelial cells. This interaction is essential for the migration of lymphocytes from the bloodstream into the tissues, a process known as extravasation. E-selectin, on the other hand, is expressed on the surface of endothelial cells in response to inflammation and is involved in the recruitment of leukocytes to sites of infection or injury. P-selectin is stored in Weibel-Palade bodies within platelets and endothelial cells and is rapidly released onto the cell surface in response to inflammation, facilitating the adhesion and activation of platelets and leukocytes.

Selectiin receptors are involved in a variety of immune responses, including the activation of T cells, the recruitment of immune cells to sites of infection, and the regulation of inflammation. They are also implicated in the pathogenesis of various diseases, including autoimmune disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, and certain types of cancer.
