Seedevõrgustik

Seedevõrgustik is an Estonian term that translates to "food web" in English. It describes the intricate network of feeding relationships within an ecological community, illustrating how energy and nutrients flow through different organisms. Unlike a simple food chain, which depicts a single linear path of consumption, a food web acknowledges that most organisms consume and are consumed by multiple other species.

In a food web, producers form the base. These are typically photosynthetic organisms like plants and algae, which convert sunlight into energy. Primary consumers, or herbivores, feed on these producers. Secondary consumers, which can be carnivores or omnivores, then prey on primary consumers. Tertiary consumers, and sometimes even quaternary consumers, occupy higher trophic levels, feeding on organisms from lower levels. Detritivores and decomposers, such as fungi and bacteria, play a crucial role by breaking down dead organic matter from all trophic levels, returning essential nutrients to the soil and water, thus supporting the producers and completing the cycle.

The complexity of a food web reflects the biodiversity of an ecosystem. Each organism has a specific niche, and the interactions within the food web are vital for maintaining the stability and health of the ecosystem. The removal or decline of a single species can have cascading effects, potentially disrupting the populations of other species and altering the overall structure and function of the community.
