Seealong

Seealong is a coastal village located on the southwestern coast of the state of Maine, United States. The settlement sits along a gently sloping shoreline that faces the Atlantic Ocean, with the village center nestled at the confluence of Seealong Bay and a small freshwater creek. The village occupies approximately 4.2 square miles of land and 1.1 square miles of water, with an elevation of about 12 meters (39 feet) above sea level.

The earliest known habitation of the area dates back to the 17th century when French explorers first charted the coastline. The village was officially incorporated in 1875 under the name "Seealong" after a local indigenous word meaning "river mouth". Its population has remained small and stable, with the 2020 census reporting 1,236 residents. The demographic composition is predominantly White, with a small but growing mix of Native American residents and other ethnic groups.

Seealong’s economy is centered around maritime activities, particularly commercial fishing and oyster farming, which have been mainstays since the late 1800s. Tourism also plays a significant role, with visitors attracted to the beach, local seafood restaurants, and annual maritime festivals that celebrate the village’s historical ties to the sea. The village is accessible via Route 95, connecting it to the larger towns of Ellsworth and Harpswell, and a seasonal ferry service operates to a nearby island community.

Preservation of the natural environment is a priority for local authorities. Several conservation initiatives protect the marine ecosystem, coastal bluffs, and historic lighthouses in the area. Educational outreach programs in the local elementary school emphasize coastal stewardship and maritime heritage.
