Schallbild

Schallbild is a German term meaning "sound image." It is used in acoustics, psychoacoustics, musicology, and audio engineering to refer to either the perceptual image of sound in listening or a visual representation of its acoustic properties. In perceptual terms, a Schallbild describes how a listener reconstructs the auditory scene from a sound source within a given environment. This involves timbre, pitch, loudness, and spatial cues such as direction, distance, and reverberation, which together form the image of the sound in space.

In recording, mixing, and sound design, the term is also used to describe the overall sonic impression or spatial image of a sound in a stereo or multichannel system. Practitioners talk about the Schallbild of a recording, meaning how clearly the sources are localized and how the balance, reverberation and ambience contribute to the perceived scene.

In analytical contexts, Schallbild can denote a visual representation of sound, such as a spectrogram or other time–frequency depiction of acoustic energy. However, spectrogram is the more precise term for this kind of visualization, and Schallbild remains a broader, sometimes synonymous expression for the audible or perceptual sound image.
