Scalasaig

Scalasaig is a small settlement located on the Isle of Colonsay in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It is the main village and primary ferry terminal for the island. The name Scalasaig is derived from the Old Norse "Skálavík," meaning "bay of huts" or "sheltered bay."

The settlement is situated on the eastern side of Colonsay, facing the mainland and the neighbouring island of Jura. It is home to the island's ferry service, operated by CalMac, which connects Colonsay to Oban and, seasonally, to the islands of Islay and Tiree. This makes Scalasaig a vital hub for both residents and visitors.

The village itself consists of a scattering of houses, a hotel, a shop, and the ferry terminal buildings. The surrounding landscape is characterized by rolling hills, machair (coastal grassland), and small bays. Scalasaig serves as the gateway to exploring the rest of Colonsay, which is known for its natural beauty, birdlife, and sandy beaches, including the popular Kiltane Beach. The island's rich history is also evident in its ancient sites and ruins. Scalasaig provides essential services and is the focal point for the island's community life.
