Saudeleur

The Saudeleur dynasty was a period in the history of Pohnpei, an island in the Federated States of Micronesia. This era is primarily associated with the construction of the monumental ruins of Nan Madol, an ancient city built on a coral reef. The Saudeleur rulers are believed to have come from the island of Katau, possibly as an invading force, and established their dominance over Pohnpei.

Their reign, which began around the 11th or 12th century, is characterized by the imposition of a centralized political system and significant societal changes. The Saudeleur consolidated power, introducing new religious practices and social hierarchies. The construction of Nan Madol itself, a massive undertaking requiring immense labor and sophisticated engineering, is the most enduring legacy of their rule. The city served as the political and ceremonial center of Pohnpei during this time.

The Saudeleur dynasty ended in the 17th century with the overthrow of the last Saudeleur ruler, Saum Peipoch, by the legendary warrior Isokelekel. Isokelekel is credited with uniting Pohnpei and establishing a new social order, marking the end of Saudeleur influence and the beginning of a new era. The exact reasons for the decline of the Saudeleur and the specifics of their rule are still subjects of archaeological and anthropological study, with much of the information derived from oral traditions and the interpretation of the archaeological remains.
