Salt processing refers to the various methods used to extract and purify salt from natural sources. The primary sources of salt are seawater, underground rock salt deposits, and salt lakes. The oldest and most common method is solar evaporation, where seawater or brine from salt lakes is channeled into shallow ponds. Sunlight and wind cause the water to evaporate, leaving behind salt crystals. These crystals are then harvested. Another significant method is rock salt mining, which involves excavating salt deposits from underground. This can be done through conventional mining techniques or by solution mining, where water is injected into the deposit to dissolve the salt, and the resulting brine is pumped to the surface. After extraction, the salt often undergoes further processing to remove impurities and achieve a desired grain size and purity. This can involve washing, crushing, screening, and drying. Different grades of salt are produced for various applications, including food, de-icing, industrial processes, and animal feed.
