Salakirjoitus, often translated as cryptography or secret writing, refers to the practice and study of techniques for secure communication in the presence of adversaries. Its core purpose is to enable confidentiality, integrity, and authenticity of information. Cryptography is broadly divided into two main categories: symmetric-key cryptography and asymmetric-key cryptography.

Symmetric-key cryptography uses a single secret key for both encryption and decryption. Both the sender and receiver must possess this shared secret key. Examples include the Data Encryption Standard (DES) and the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). While efficient for large amounts of data, the challenge lies in securely distributing the secret key.

Asymmetric-key cryptography, also known as public-key cryptography, employs a pair of keys: a public key and a private key. The public key can be shared freely and is used for encryption, while the corresponding private key, kept secret by its owner, is used for decryption. This method is fundamental to many modern security protocols, such as Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security (SSL/TLS) used for secure internet communication.

The field of cryptography has a long history, evolving from simple substitution ciphers used in ancient times to the complex mathematical algorithms employed today. It is essential for protecting sensitive information in various domains, including finance, government, and personal communications. Cryptanalysis, the study of methods for breaking ciphers, is the adversary to cryptography, and the ongoing arms race between cryptographers and cryptanalysts drives innovation in the field.
