Sainsbury

Sainsbury's, formally Sainsbury's plc, is a British multinational grocery and general merchandise retailer. It was founded in 1869 by John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Anne in London, opening a dairy shop that grew into a chain of supermarkets and convenience stores. Today it operates primarily in the United Kingdom, with online grocery shopping and delivery, and is regarded as one of the country's leading supermarket chains.

Throughout the 20th century the company expanded into larger stores, introducing various formats and private-label ranges. In 2016 Sainsbury's completed a takeover of the Home Retail Group, acquiring Argos and Habitat, which added a general merchandise and home furnishings dimension to the business and led to the integration of Argos within Sainsbury's store network.

The group runs Sainsbury's Supermarkets and Sainsbury's Local convenience stores, along with an online grocery service. It markets its own-label ranges, including Sainsbury's, Taste the Difference, and Basics, and also operates Argos as a general merchandise retailer within the group, following the 2016 acquisition of the Home Retail Group.

Sainsbury's plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange and has been a constituent of the FTSE 100 index. The company is headquartered in London and employs tens of thousands of people. It competes with Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons in the UK grocery market and pursues programs related to sustainability and community initiatives.
