SMPTE Time Code is a universal system for uniquely identifying each frame of video or film. It assigns a specific address to every frame, allowing for precise synchronization and referencing within audio-visual productions. The standard format is Hours:Minutes:Seconds:Frames, with the frame rate determined by the system being used (e.g., 23.976 for NTSC film, 25 for PAL, 29.97 for NTSC video, 30 for drop-frame video).

Developed by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, SMPTE Time Code was initially conceived to aid in the editing of linear media like film and analog tape. It provided a common language for editors to communicate specific points in time, facilitating complex cuts and sequences. The system allows for both longitudinal time code (LTC), which is an audio signal embedded within the program audio, and vertical interval time code (VITC), which is embedded within the vertical blanking interval of a video signal.

In modern digital workflows, SMPTE Time Code remains crucial for maintaining synchronization between different media elements, such as video, audio, and graphics. It enables accurate logging of footage, efficient editing, and precise synchronization of external devices and playback systems. Time code generators and readers are common tools in post-production facilities, ensuring that all components of a project are aligned correctly.
