SLPIs
SLPIs, or Secretory Leukocyte Protease Inhibitors, are a family of serine protease inhibitors produced by epithelial cells and found in various bodily secretions, including saliva, tears, mucus, and seminal fluid. These small proteins play a crucial role in innate immunity and tissue protection. Their primary function is to neutralize proteases released by host cells, such as neutrophil elastase, and those produced by pathogens. By inhibiting these enzymes, SLPIs prevent tissue damage that could otherwise be caused by uncontrolled proteolytic activity.
SLPIs also possess antimicrobial properties, effectively inhibiting the growth of various bacteria, fungi, and even some
