Süsinikuatomite, also known as carbonium ions, are transient species in chemistry that are formed when a carbon atom is positively charged. This unusual situation arises due to the loss of one or more electrons from the carbon atom, typically as a result of a high-energy collision or a chemical reaction.

Unlike neutral carbon atoms, which share electrons with other atoms to form covalent bonds, negatively charged anions, or positively charged cations, the carbonium ion has a full outer energy level, but with a positively charged core. This is a consequence of the carbon atom losing an electron or electrons, which are then ejected from the atom's valence shell.

Carbonium ions play an important role in chemical reactions, particularly those bearing on the formation and rearrangements of organic compounds. For instance, in ionic addition reactions involving vinyl cations (divalent carbonium ions) and nucleophiles, they serve as intermediates in forming new carbon-carbon bonds.
