If the concentration is below the LEL, there is not enough fuel to sustain combustion.

The UEL is the maximum concentration of a flammable gas or vapor in air, expressed as a percentage by volume, above which an explosion cannot occur. If the concentration is above the UEL, there is too much fuel relative to the oxygen available, which prevents ignition or sustained burning.

The range between the LEL and the UEL is known as the explosive or flammable range. Within this range, a flammable mixture can ignite and propagate a flame, potentially leading to an explosion if an ignition source is present. The width of this range is an important factor in assessing the severity of a hazard.

Factors such as temperature, pressure, and the presence of inert gases can influence these limits. For instance, higher temperatures can lower the LEL and widen the flammable range, increasing the risk of ignition.
