Ryggmärgsmembranet
Ryggmärgsmembranet, also known as the meninges of the spinal cord, refers to the three protective membranes that surround the spinal cord. These membranes are continuous with the cranial meninges that enclose the brain. The outermost layer is the dura mater, a tough, fibrous sac that provides a strong protective barrier. Beneath the dura mater is the arachnoid mater, a delicate, web-like membrane. Between the arachnoid mater and the innermost layer is the subarachnoid space, which is filled with cerebrospinal fluid. This fluid acts as a shock absorber, cushioning the spinal cord from injury. The innermost layer, directly adhering to the spinal cord, is the pia mater. This highly vascular membrane is thin and delicate, containing blood vessels that supply the spinal cord with nutrients and oxygen. Together, these three meningeal layers form a crucial protective system for the central nervous system, safeguarding the vital nerve tissue of the spinal cord. Inflammation of these membranes is known as meningitis, which can affect both the brain and spinal cord.
