Rousanou

Rousanou is a historic monastery located in Thessaly, Greece. It is one of the six monasteries that currently reside atop the Meteora rock formations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monastery is perched precariously on a towering sandstone pillar, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

The origins of Rousanou are somewhat debated, but it is believed to have been founded in the 14th or 15th century. Its patron saints are Saint Barbara and Saint Paraskevi. Unlike many other Meteora monasteries that were built by monks, Rousanou was established by a community of nuns. This makes it one of the few surviving female monastic establishments in the region.

The monastery has undergone several reconstructions and renovations over the centuries, particularly in the 16th century. Its Katholikon, the main church, features well-preserved frescoes that depict religious scenes and figures, showcasing the artistic styles of the Byzantine period. Access to Rousanou, like other Meteora monasteries, involves climbing a significant number of steps carved into the rock.
