Riigikantsler
Riigikantsler is a term used in the Estonian legal system to refer to the Chancellor of the Republic. The position is held by the President of Estonia, who serves as the head of state. The term "riigikantsler" is derived from the German word "Reichskanzler," which was used to refer to the Chancellor of the German Empire. In Estonia, the President is responsible for the overall governance of the country, including the appointment of the Prime Minister and other high-ranking officials. The President also has the power to dissolve the Riigikogu, the Estonian Parliament, and to declare a state of emergency. The role of the riigikantsler is a constitutional one, and the President's duties are outlined in the Estonian Constitution. The current riigikantsler is Alar Karis, who has been in office since 2021.
