Restriktsoonmodifikatsioonisüsteemides (RMS) are a class of gene expression regulatory systems that control the transcription of genes by altering the chromatin structure. These systems are crucial for maintaining genomic stability and regulating gene expression in response to various environmental and developmental cues. RMSs are characterized by the presence of specific DNA sequences, known as restriktsoone, which are recognized by a family of proteins called restriktsoonmodifikatsiooniproteiine (RMPs). RMPs can methylate or demethylate the restriktsoon sequences, thereby modifying the chromatin structure and influencing gene transcription.

The restriktsoonmodifikatsioonisüsteemides are classified into two main types based on the type of modification they perform: methyltransferases and demethylases.
