Rennesøy

Rennesøy is a municipality in Rogaland county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Ryfylke, on the western coast of Norway. The municipality comprises a number of islands, the largest of which is Rennesøy itself. Other significant islands include Brimse, Bru, Fjell, Kyrkjøy, and Utstein. The administrative center is located in Vikevåg on the island of Rennesøy.

The geography of Rennesøy is characterized by a coastal landscape with fjords, islands, and agricultural areas. The islands are connected by bridges and tunnels, facilitating transportation and integration with the mainland. The Utstein Monastery, a former Augustinian priory, is a significant historical landmark located on the island of Klosterøy, which is part of Rennesøy municipality. The monastery dates back to the late 13th century and is well-preserved. Rennesøy was established as a municipality in 1838. In 2020, Rennesøy merged with the municipalities of Finnøy and Sjernarøy to form the new Stavanger municipality. However, the former Rennesøy municipality retained its administrative identity as a district within Stavanger. The district continues to be a vibrant community with a blend of traditional industries and modern development.
