Redoxtillståndet refers to the oxidation state of an atom within a molecule or compound. It is a bookkeeping concept used to track the hypothetical charge an atom would have if all its bonds to different atoms were purely ionic. The oxidation state is determined by a set of rules, where certain elements are assigned standard oxidation states in specific compounds. For example, oxygen usually has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides where it is -1, and when bonded to fluorine, where it is positive. Hydrogen typically has an oxidation state of +1 when bonded to nonmetals and -1 when bonded to metals.

The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral compound must be zero. In ions, the sum of the oxidation states equals the charge of the ion. Understanding redoxtillståndet is crucial for analyzing redox reactions, which involve the transfer of electrons. A decrease in oxidation state signifies reduction (gain of electrons), while an increase in oxidation state indicates oxidation (loss of electrons).
