Reaktioyhtälöllä, or chemical equation, is a concise representation of a chemical reaction. It uses chemical formulas and symbols to describe the reactants, products, and the stoichiometry of the reaction. The general format of a chemical equation is:

Reactants → Products

For example, the combustion of methane can be represented as:

CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2H2O

In this equation, CH4 (methane) and O2 (oxygen) are the reactants, and CO2 (carbon dioxide) and H2O (water) are the products. The coefficients (numbers in front of the formulas) indicate the stoichiometry of the reaction, meaning the relative amounts of reactants and products.

Chemical equations can also include state symbols to indicate the physical state of the substances, such as (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas, and (aq) for aqueous solution. For instance, the dissolution of sodium chloride in water can be written as:

NaCl(s) → Na+(aq) + Cl−(aq)

Additionally, chemical equations can be balanced to ensure that the number of atoms of each element is the same on both sides of the equation. This is done by adjusting the coefficients of the reactants and products. The balanced equation for the combustion of methane is already balanced, as there are four carbon atoms, eight hydrogen atoms, and four oxygen atoms on both sides of the equation.

Chemical equations are fundamental in chemistry for understanding and predicting chemical reactions, as well as for calculating the amounts of reactants and products involved in a reaction.
