ReDissolution

Redissolution is the process by which a material that has either precipitated from a solution or remains as a residual solid is dissolved again into the surrounding solvent. It can also describe the re-dissolution of a solute after conditions change that favor solvation rather than solidification. Redissolution typically occurs when factors such as solvent composition, temperature, pH, or the formation of soluble complexes alter the solubility of the substance, allowing it to re-enter solution from a solid phase or from a previously dissolved state.

Mechanistically, redissolution depends on solubility changes and mass-transfer steps. In aqueous systems, a rise in temperature or a change to a more favorable solvent composition can shift the solubility equilibrium, while complexing agents or ionic strength adjustments can increase apparent solubility. The rate of redissolution is influenced by surface area, particle size, stirring, and the presence of barriers such as coatings or gels on the solid surface.

Redissolution has relevance across several fields. In chemistry and materials science, it is encountered during purification, crystallization control, and solvent exchange processes. In pharmaceuticals, redissolution is considered in dissolution testing and formulation design to ensure complete and uniform solubility of a drug. In environmental and geological contexts, changes in pH or chemical composition can cause contaminants sorbed on solids to redissolve and migrate.
