Rashid al-Din Hamadani was a Persian polymath who lived from approximately 1247 to 1318. He was a historian, physician, astronomer, and alchemist. Born in Hamadan, Persia, he served in the Ilkhanate, a Mongol dynasty that ruled Persia. He is most famous for his monumental work, the Jami al-Tarawikh, or Compendium of Chronicles.

The Jami al-Tarawikh is one of the most ambitious historical works of the medieval period. It aimed to provide a universal history, beginning with the creation of the world and continuing through the history of the Mongols and their predecessors, as well as other major civilizations and empires. Rashid al-Din meticulously researched and compiled information from various sources, including oral traditions, written documents, and interviews. His work is invaluable for understanding the history of the Mongol Empire and its impact on the wider world.

Beyond his historical writings, Rashid al-Din was also a respected physician. He authored several medical treatises, contributing to the medical knowledge of his time. His astronomical observations and writings also demonstrate his engagement with scientific inquiry. Rashid al-Din's intellectual contributions were recognized during his lifetime, and his works have had a lasting influence on historical scholarship and scientific thought in the Islamic world and beyond. He was eventually executed during a period of political upheaval within the Ilkhanate.
