Radionsonden

Radiosondes are lightweight, battery-powered devices attached to weather balloons that collect and transmit atmospheric data during their ascent through the atmosphere. They are essential tools in meteorology, providing critical measurements such as temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and wind speed and direction at various altitudes.

The primary function of a radiosonde is to monitor atmospheric conditions in real-time, facilitating weather forecasting, climate research, and atmospheric studies. The device typically consists of sensors, a radio transmission system, and an altimeter. As the balloon rises, the sensors record data at different layers of the atmosphere, which are then transmitted to ground stations via radio frequencies. Radiosondes are launched regularly around the world, often twice daily, from designated stations or during research campaigns. They ascend to altitudes of up to 35 kilometers before bursting due to the decreasing atmospheric pressure and gravity causes the attached parachute to descend, allowing the sensors and transmission equipment to be recovered and reused.

These instruments have been instrumental in advancing weather prediction capabilities and understanding atmospheric processes. Technological improvements have included the integration of GPS for more accurate wind measurements and miniaturization of components for longer-lasting and more robust units. However, challenges remain regarding the environmental impact of balloon debris and the need for sustainable materials.
