RTJtiivisteet

RTJtiivisteet (ring-type joint gaskets) are metallic seals designed for use with Ring-Type Joint flanges in high-pressure and high-temperature service, most notably in the oil and gas industry. They form a metal-to-metal seal by deforming into the groove of the RTJ flange, providing a reliable seal under demanding conditions.

The gaskets are typically made from metal alloys such as copper, stainless steel, carbon steel, or nickel-based alloys, chosen for temperature, pressure, and corrosion resistance. The two most common cross-section designs are BX and RX, which correspond to different groove geometries on RTJ flanges. The choice of gasket type and material is driven by the operating conditions, including pressure, temperature, and the chemical nature of the fluid.

RTJ gaskets are specified and sized to standards from API and ASME, and they require matching RTJ flanges with the appropriate groove profile. Proper installation is essential: gaskets should be clean and undamaged, flanges aligned, and recommended torque and seating procedures followed to ensure a proper seal. After disassembly, RTJ gaskets are typically not reused because the deformation of the gasket groove prevents re-sealing.

Advantages of RTJtiivisteet include strong sealing performance in extreme conditions and good resistance to relaxation over time. Limitations include higher cost, the need for exact flange and gasket compatibility, and the requirement for careful handling and installation. They are widely used in upstream and downstream petroleum equipment, chemical plants, and other industries requiring durable, high-integrity flange connections.
