Räterichsbodensee

Räterichsbodensee is a reservoir located in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. It is situated in the upper Simme valley, near the municipality of Boltigen. The lake was created by the construction of the Räterichsboden Dam, which was completed in 1933. The dam is an arch dam made of concrete.

The primary purpose of the Räterichsbodensee is hydroelectric power generation. The reservoir stores water from the Simme river, which is then used to drive turbines at the nearby Grimsel power station. The lake also plays a role in flood control for the Simme valley.

Räterichsbodensee has a surface area of approximately 0.9 square kilometers and a maximum depth of around 80 meters. Its elevation is 1,257 meters above sea level. The reservoir's water level fluctuates significantly throughout the year, depending on the demand for electricity and precipitation.

The surrounding landscape is characterized by steep mountain slopes and alpine meadows, making it a scenic area. The lake is accessible by road, and hiking trails in the vicinity offer opportunities for outdoor recreation. During warmer months, the clear waters of the Räterichsbodensee reflect the impressive mountain scenery. The presence of the reservoir is a key feature of the engineered landscape in the Bernese Alps, contributing to Switzerland's energy infrastructure while also shaping the local environment.
