Qattara
Qattara is a town in the Western Desert of Egypt, located approximately 100 kilometers west of the Nile Delta. It is situated in the Qattara Depression, a large depression in the Sahara Desert, which is the lowest point in Egypt and one of the lowest points on the African continent. The depression is characterized by its flat, sandy terrain and is known for its extreme heat and aridity. The town itself is small, with a population of around 10,000 people, and serves as a base for the nearby Al-Wadi Al-Gedid oil field, which is one of the largest oil fields in Egypt. The area is also known for its unique geological features, including the Qattara Depression's salt flats and the nearby Wadi Al-Hitan, a large wadi that flows into the depression. The town and its surroundings are an important area for scientific research, particularly in the fields of geology and climatology.
