Pöördvõrdet

Pöördvõrdet is an Estonian term that translates to "inverse proportion" or "inverse variation" in English. It describes a relationship between two quantities where as one quantity increases, the other quantity decreases proportionally. Mathematically, if two quantities, say x and y, are in inverse proportion, their product is constant. This relationship can be expressed as xy = k, where k is a non-zero constant.

This means that if x doubles, y must be halved to keep their product the same. Similarly, if x is multiplied by a factor, y must be divided by the same factor. For example, the time it takes to complete a task is often inversely proportional to the number of people working on it. If more people work, the task is completed faster, assuming they can work independently and efficiently. Another common example is the relationship between the pressure and volume of a gas at a constant temperature, as described by Boyle's Law, where pressure and volume are inversely proportional. Understanding inverse proportion is crucial in various fields, including physics, chemistry, economics, and everyday problem-solving where such relationships are encountered.
