Päästemehhanismis, also known as mitigation mechanisms, are strategies and actions taken to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming. These mechanisms are crucial components of climate change mitigation efforts, which aim to stabilize the global climate system and prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. Päästemehhanismis can be categorized into several types, including technological, economic, and policy measures.

Technological measures involve the development and deployment of clean and renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and hydro power, as well as energy efficiency improvements in industries, buildings, and transportation. Economic measures focus on incentivizing the adoption of low-carbon technologies and practices through subsidies, taxes, and other financial instruments. Policy measures encompass a wide range of regulatory and legislative actions, such as carbon pricing, emissions trading systems, and standards for energy efficiency and emissions reduction.

International cooperation is essential for the effective implementation of päästemehhanismis. The Paris Agreement, adopted in 2015, is a landmark international treaty that aims to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change by keeping a global temperature rise this century well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius. The agreement encourages countries to enhance their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), which outline each country's individual commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
