They typically consist of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid. When a small amount of strong acid or base is added to a buffer solution, the buffer components react to neutralize the added ions, thereby minimizing changes in pH. This buffering action is essential in many biological and chemical processes where a narrow pH range is critical for optimal function. For instance, in biological systems, blood pH is tightly regulated by buffer systems like the bicarbonate buffer system. In industrial applications, buffers are used in processes such as fermentation, dyeing, and pharmaceutical manufacturing to ensure consistent reaction conditions. The effectiveness of a buffer is quantified by its buffer capacity, which indicates its resistance to pH changes. A buffer is most effective when the concentrations of the weak acid and its conjugate base are equal, a condition known as the half-equivalence point. The pH at which a buffer is most effective is given by the pKa of the weak acid component.
