Puskurivastetta refers to the buffer capacity or buffering power of a solution. It quantifies a buffer solution's ability to resist changes in pH when small amounts of acid or base are added. A buffer solution typically consists of a weak acid and its conjugate base, or a weak base and its conjugate acid. These components can neutralize added acids or bases, thereby minimizing significant pH fluctuations.

The effectiveness of a buffer is influenced by the concentrations of its weak acid and conjugate base components, or weak base and conjugate acid components. A buffer is most effective when the concentrations of these two species are equal, which occurs at the pKa of the weak acid or pKb of the weak base. This is known as the buffering region.

Mathematically, buffer capacity can be expressed by the Van Slyke equation, which relates the buffer capacity to the concentrations of the buffer components and the pH. A higher buffer capacity indicates a greater ability of the solution to resist pH changes. This property is crucial in many chemical and biological systems, such as blood, where maintaining a stable pH is essential for life. In laboratory settings, buffers are widely used in experiments that require a specific and stable pH environment.
