PtdBm is a term that refers to a unit of power relative to one milliwatt, expressed on a logarithmic decibel scale. The abbreviation stands for "power in dB relative to 1 milliwatt." This unit is commonly used in telecommunications, radio frequency engineering, and networking to measure signal strength.

The formula for converting a power value P (in milliwatts) to dBm is: dBm = 10 * log10(P / 1 mW). Conversely, to convert from dBm back to milliwatts, the formula is: P (mW) = 10^(dBm / 10). A value of 0 dBm represents exactly 1 milliwatt. Positive dBm values indicate power levels greater than 1 milliwatt, while negative dBm values indicate power levels less than 1 milliwatt. For instance, 3 dBm is approximately 2 milliwatts, and -3 dBm is approximately 0.5 milliwatts.

The use of dBm simplifies calculations involving signal amplification and attenuation. When signals are combined, their power levels in watts are multiplied, but their power levels in dBm are added.
