Protonationacquiring refers to the process by which a molecule or ion gains a proton, which is a positively charged hydrogen ion (H+). This gain results in an increase in the species' positive charge or a decrease in its negative charge. Protonation is a fundamental chemical reaction that occurs in many chemical and biological systems.

In Brønsted-Lowry acid-base theory, a Brønsted-Lowry acid is a proton donor, and a Brønsted-Lowry base is a proton acceptor. When an acid donates a proton to a base, the base becomes protonated. For example, when hydrochloric acid (HCl) reacts with water (H2O), the HCl acts as an acid and donates a proton to the water, which acts as a base. The water molecule becomes protonated, forming the hydronium ion (H3O+).
