Proteiinisubyksikön, often referred to as a protein subunit, is a single polypeptide chain that makes up a larger protein complex. Many proteins are not functional as single units but require the association of multiple subunits to form a functional quaternary structure. These subunits can be identical, in which case the protein is said to be homomultimeric, or they can be different, leading to a heteromultimeric protein.

The assembly of subunits into a functional protein complex is crucial for a wide range of biological processes. For instance, hemoglobin, the protein responsible for oxygen transport in the blood, is a heterotetramer composed of two alpha and two beta subunits. The specific arrangement and interactions between these subunits are essential for its oxygen-binding affinity and cooperative binding properties. Similarly, enzymes often function as multisubunit complexes, where each subunit may contribute a catalytic domain, a regulatory site, or a structural role.

The interactions between protein subunits are typically non-covalent, involving forces such as hydrogen bonds, ionic interactions, hydrophobic effects, and van der Waals forces. In some cases, however, disulfide bonds can also link subunits together. The precise nature of these interactions dictates the stability and specificity of the protein complex.
