Proportionalitást

Proportionalitást, often translated as proportionality, is a fundamental principle in many fields, including law, politics, and science. In essence, it dictates that a response or action should be in proportion to the situation it addresses. This means that the means used should be neither excessive nor insufficient when compared to the end goal or the offense committed.

In legal contexts, proportionality is a crucial aspect of administrative and constitutional law. It ensures that government actions, such as restrictions on rights or the imposition of penalties, are balanced and justifiable. For example, a punishment for a minor offense should not be as severe as that for a major crime. Similarly, the infringement on an individual's liberty must be necessary and the least restrictive means to achieve a legitimate public interest.

The principle of proportionality also appears in international law, particularly in the laws of armed conflict. Military actions must be proportional to the military advantage sought, meaning that the anticipated collateral damage to civilians and civilian objects should not be excessive in relation to the concrete and direct military advantage anticipated. In scientific and statistical analysis, proportionality refers to a relationship where one quantity changes at the same rate as another.
