Prokolipase

Prokolipase is a protein that plays a role in fat digestion. It is produced by the pancreas and released into the small intestine. Prokolipase acts as a cofactor for pancreatic lipase, the primary enzyme responsible for breaking down dietary fats. While pancreatic lipase is capable of hydrolyzing triglycerides, its activity is significantly enhanced in the presence of prokolipase. Prokolipase binds to bile salts and lipase, bringing them together at the surface of fat globules. This interaction allows lipase to access and efficiently break down the fats into fatty acids and monoglycerides, which can then be absorbed by the body. Without sufficient prokolipase, fat digestion and absorption can be impaired, potentially leading to steatorrhea, a condition characterized by the presence of excess fat in the stool. Prokolipase is believed to be synthesized as an inactive precursor and activated in the intestinal lumen. Its importance lies in ensuring efficient nutrient uptake from the diet.
