Produsentprisindekser, often abbreviated as PPI, measure the average change over time in selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. These indices are crucial economic indicators that track inflation at the producer level, before goods reach consumers. PPIs are compiled by statistical agencies in many countries, including Statistics Norway (SSB) for Norway.

The calculation of PPI involves surveying a basket of goods and services produced domestically. Prices are collected from producers at various stages of the production process. The indices are then weighted according to the value of production for each good or service. Changes in the PPI can signal future changes in consumer price inflation, as rising production costs are often passed on to consumers.

PPIs are used for various purposes, including economic analysis, forecasting, and as a basis for adjusting contracts and wages. They provide insights into the health of the manufacturing and industrial sectors and can highlight inflationary pressures within the economy. Different PPIs exist, often categorized by industry, product type, or stage of processing (e.g., raw materials, intermediate goods, finished goods).
