Prisindeksene, often translated as price indices, are statistical measures used to track the average change in prices for a basket of goods and services over time. They are crucial tools for understanding inflation and deflation within an economy.

The most well-known price index is the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services. This basket typically includes items like food, housing, transportation, clothing, and medical care. The CPI is a key indicator of the cost of living and is frequently used to adjust wages, pensions, and other payments for inflation.

Other important price indices exist, such as the Producer Price Index (PPI), which measures the average change over time in the selling prices received by domestic producers for their output. The PPI can provide an early indication of future consumer price changes as it reflects costs earlier in the supply chain.

Calculating price indices involves selecting a representative basket of goods and services and then tracking their prices over different periods. The index is usually set to a base year, where the index value is typically 100. Subsequent changes are then expressed as a percentage relative to this base. These indices are essential for economic analysis, policy-making, and for individuals to understand the purchasing power of their money.
