For example, in the sentence "Der Schlüssel liegt auf dem Tisch," the phrase "auf dem Tisch" is a Präpositionalglied. "Auf" is the preposition, and "dem Tisch" is its object.

These phrases answer questions such as where, when, how, or why an action occurs. In the example above, "auf dem Tisch" answers the question "Wo liegt der Schlüssel?". Other examples include "mit großer Freude" (how) and "wegen des schlechten Wetters" (why). Präpositionalglieder can be moved within a sentence, though their position can subtly alter the emphasis. They are a flexible and common way to enrich sentence structure and convey detailed meaning.
