The prior probability, denoted as P(H), is the initial belief in the hypothesis before any new data is observed. The likelihood, denoted as P(E|H), quantifies how probable the observed evidence (E) is given that the hypothesis (H) is true. Bayes' theorem states that the posterior probability, P(H|E), is proportional to the product of the prior probability and the likelihood: P(H|E) = [P(E|H) * P(H)] / P(E).

The term P(E) is the marginal probability of the evidence, which acts as a normalizing constant ensuring that the posterior probabilities sum to one. It can be calculated by summing the product of the likelihood and prior probability over all possible hypotheses.

In essence, posterior probability is a way to revise our beliefs in light of new information. As more evidence is gathered, the posterior probability can be used as the new prior probability for subsequent updates, leading to a continuous refinement of our understanding.
