Porausnesteen, also known as drilling fluid or drilling mud, is a crucial component in the process of drilling boreholes, particularly in oil and gas exploration, but also in water well drilling and other geotechnical applications. Its primary functions are multifaceted and essential for the success and efficiency of the drilling operation.

One of the most vital roles of porausnesteen is to cool and lubricate the drill bit and the drill string. As the drill bit grinds through rock, friction generates significant heat. The fluid circulates down the drill string and back up the annulus between the drill string and the borehole wall, carrying away this heat and preventing damage to the equipment. Lubrication reduces wear and tear on the drill bit and other components.

Another key function is to carry the rock cuttings generated by the drill bit to the surface. The porausnesteen suspends these small rock fragments, preventing them from accumulating at the bottom of the hole and hindering further drilling progress. Upon reaching the surface, the cuttings are separated from the fluid, which is then often recycled and reused.

Porausnesteen also plays a critical role in controlling subsurface pressures. The weight of the fluid column in the borehole exerts hydrostatic pressure, which helps to counteract the pressure of fluids within the rock formations. This prevents blowouts, a dangerous and potentially catastrophic uncontrolled release of oil, gas, or water from the well. The properties of the porausnesteen, such as its density, are carefully managed to maintain this pressure balance.

Furthermore, the fluid helps to stabilize the borehole walls. It forms a filter cake on the permeable sections of the rock, preventing the borehole from collapsing. This stable environment is essential for the integrity of the well throughout its construction and operational life. Different types of porausnesteen exist, including water-based muds, oil-based muds, and synthetic-based muds, each chosen based on the specific geological conditions and drilling requirements.
